The population of the Chittagong Hill Tracts about 15,87,000 (census, 2011), among them around 50% are Tribal. They are the major consumer of Cuchia  (Monopterus cuchia) and mostly collected from Kaptai Lake. Cuchia has huge local demand and this is the most demandable export item in Bangladesh. The price is high in foreign markets because of its nutritional and medicinal value.
